Why Not Make Room for Music?

Some people go through life with music always by their side. Others hardly listen to music at all. And even among those who do, some actively seek out music that speaks to them, while others simply listen to whatever happens to be playing—the latest hit songs, the music they hear on the radio, or the songs everyone else is listening to.

There is no right or wrong way to enjoy music. How we connect with it is entirely up to each of us.

Still, at PASTEL RECORDS, we believe that getting to know just a little more about music—discovering an artist, a song, or a genre you might not otherwise have come across—can make everyday life a little richer.

And when you find music that truly resonates with you, it can become much more than something you simply listen to. It can stay with you through different moments in life, and when you are feeling lost, troubled, or low, it may offer comfort, encouragement, or simply a reason to keep going.

はじめまして。PASTEL RECORDSの寺田と申します。PASTEL RECORDSは、「好奇心とやすらぎの音楽」というキーワードで、世界のインディペンデント・ミュージックより、美しく、個性的で、心がこもっていて、気取っていない、日々の生活の中でも、やわらかな刺激を与えてくれる心地よい音楽をセレクトしご紹介しております。

今はなき大阪の中古レコード/CDショップ、モダンタイムスにて約13年の勤務後、2006年5月にネットショップをスタート。翌2007年3月に、奈良市の餅飯殿商店街内にある、商業インキュベーション施設、「夢CUBE」に出店。2009年には、アートユニオンと共同で、pastel records labelを開始、Sharon Van Etten、naph、numberなどをリリース。３年間限定の出店後、同市内にある、カフェsample2階に移転するも、店舗での販売不振と、ネットショップ専念の為、店舗を閉店。ネットショップは、2013年末で、一旦終了し、販売に囚われない音楽WEBメディア「公園喫茶」を開始。2015年ネットショップを再開。現在は、大阪大正区にある、井尻珈琲焙煎所での出張販売、また奈良での音楽イベントを不定期で主催しています。

■ABOUT PASTEL RECORDS

Hello, and thank you for visiting PASTEL RECORDS. My name is Kenji Terada.

PASTEL RECORDS selects and introduces beautiful, distinctive, heartfelt, and unpretentious music from the world of independent music, guided by the idea of “Music for Curiosity and Comfort.” We look for music that can bring a gentle sense of discovery and inspiration to everyday life, while remaining warm, approachable, and easy to live with.

Before starting PASTEL RECORDS, I spent approximately 13 years working at Modern Times, a now-closed independent record and CD shop in Osaka.

In May 2006, I launched PASTEL RECORDS as an online shop. The following year, in March 2007, I opened a physical shop at Yume CUBE, a commercial incubation facility located in Mochiidono Shopping Street in Nara.

In 2009, I started the pastel records label in collaboration with Art Union, releasing music by artists including Sharon Van Etten, naph, and number.

After three years at Yume CUBE, I moved the shop to the second floor of Café sample in Nara. However, due to declining in-store sales and my decision to focus on the online shop, I eventually closed the physical store.

At the end of 2013, I temporarily closed the online shop and began “公園喫茶 (Koen Kissa),” a music web magazine created to explore and introduce music without being tied to selling records.

In 2015, I resumed the online shop, and PASTEL RECORDS continues today.

Alongside the online shop, I occasionally hold pop-up sales at Ijiri Coffee Roastery in Taisho, Osaka, and organize music events in Nara.
